Group Name/Domain
September 19th, 2007 By recluze

MMA has raised a good point which I would like to float here for discussion.

We’re currently calling ourselves “Security Engineering Group”. What if we move onto projects which are not directly related to Security. That would mean that our name is strictly restricted to security domain and we’re moving outside our domain. I agreed with MMA yesterday about this thing but I’ve had time to think about it overnight.

I am of the opinion that the name should remain unchanged for one reason: It will keep us focused. If we can get a project that is not related to security, our name will be a barrier in that case. But, the thing is that if we do not specialize in a domain, we can’t hope to get anywhere far with our research activities. Right now, we’re focusing only on security but are still having trouble addressing all fronts. We’re still in need of human resource. If we move onto more domains, it will make life more difficult for us.

So, my opinion. Keep the name, stick to the security domain.

This is open to discussion.

you are right, but change of name does not mean change of focus at all. See for example, my research group in Austria. Its name is Quality Engineering. However, my group is currently conducting research in Security, Security Management, Business Processes and Work flows, Software testing etc.

Actually, for a project approval, what matters is our profile and not our group name, according to my personal opinion. Suppose if we apply for a project, that is related to security, so that will be handled by security sub-group of our main research group. If there is a project related to Mathematics, that will be handled by the mathematics sub-group of our group.

On the other hand, if we are too specific, in future may be this could hinder project taking, especially from the international funding organizations. A general name, which can encompass various domains is likely to be more suitable. For projects in Pakistan (means from HEC), it is no problem at all, however, it does matter when you join some international circle.

I was talking to my professor about a possible future cooperation and she hinted on various points, like organizing a combined workshop some where in Asia in a very good conference, or look for a funding which involves a European partner etc etc (Dr Nasir sb already told me about a funding which works in the aforementioned way).

So, what’re your suggestions for a name. I know one which you talked about yesterday. Something like “Applied Computing Group”. If someone else thinks there needs to be a change, you need to come up with suggestions because we need a name/logo for our proposal.

you are right. Another good point for having a decision on general or specific name right now is that, we are in the phase of project proposal writing, in which we have to mention our group name any ways. Therefore, other group members, please comment!

I have to mention our group name in the project proposal that i was assigned :)

I recommend that we then make two groups. I have all my shorter professional life been facing change in group name and i m fed up of it.

Anyways about the names, how about Software/Quality/Engineering intelligentsia!

How about “Unlimited Frontiers” or “Boundless Brightness” or “Endless Creativity” or “You name we make/engineer it” or “Guru Engineering” or “Software Mania” or “Puzzle Ponderers” or “Massive Mind Designers” or “Muscle Brain Solutions”.

I am getting good at brainstorming! If u want more just let me know.

I think the group archive means death to our blog. Or are we just leaving it aside for serious postings.
